Katrina Marzella
Solo Baritone

Katrina Marzella has been hailed as the leading baritone horn player of her generation. Her musical development owes much to the rich brass band heritage she encountered growing up in West Lothian, Scotland. In her youth, Katrina played with the West Lothian Schools Brass Band and was Principal Baritone of both the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland and the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.
Katrina was the Scottish Schools Solo Champion for five consecutive years between 1997 and 2001. In February 2004, she won both the Scottish Youth and Open Solo Championships, becoming the first person in 30 years to hold both titles simultaneously. That very same month, Katrina won her first national award and became the inaugural BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist of the Year.
In 2006, Katrina won the British Open Solo Championships. She was subsequently invited to represent the UK at the 2007 Ern Keller International Soloist Competition, held in Sydney, Australia. She went onto win the title, and repeated this "double" feat the following year.
Katrina studied at Postgraduate Level at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. She graduated with a distinction in performance and received the Harry Mortimer Award as the Brass Student of the Year in 2006. She also an honours graduate of the University of Glasgow, where she read a degree in law. She has recently completed her Legal Practice Course at the College of Law and now works as a trainee solicitor with Weightmans LLP in Manchester.
Katrina joined Black Dyke Band in December 2011.
